Housing Options for Senior Citizens – Senior Citizen Housing

by emurphy on January 7, 2012

Many people’s needs change as they grow older and retire. But one need remains the same, shelter. Where a person lives can be as important to him or her as breathing. Having a place to live is a necessity that should never be taken lightly. The place where someone lives, however, is often shaped by the person’s ability to take care of themselves. Thankfully there are options in what housing a person chooses.

Some people choose to remain in their homes until they pass away. This is not always ideal, especially when that person is no longer able to take care of themselves. But, it is a possibility with the right supports. In home health care agencies in combination with family and friends can help a person live and die in their home with the dignity of sticking to the choice they made.

For people who no longer wish to remain in their home because it is either too big for them to take care of or is in need of too much repair, senior apartments or townhomes are another viable choice in housing. Because most apartment complexes or townhome communities have maintenance departments, the worry of maintaining or repairing things such as the plumbing, is alleviated. Apartments and townhomes are generally smaller than average single family homes making them easier to clean and be taken care of.

Another choice of Senior Citizen Housing is an independent senior living facility. This is often a good choice for someone who can still take care of their basic needs, such as hygiene, but need some help with meeting their medical needs. Assisted living facilities allow for the person to maintain their independence while providing them medical assistance as needed. The nursing staff in an assisted living facility can also provide help with checking blood sugar levels and assist with filling medication reminder boxes.

Finally, nursing homes offer total care to seniors who are no longer able to care for themselves. This care includes bathing, toileting assistance, and sometimes assistance with eating. Not everyone who resides in a nursing home is in need of total care, but the option is there when it comes time to need it.

Whatever Senior Citizen Housing a person chooses is up to that person and should meet their needs.
