As a person ages, it seems like a major concern is the ability to maintain independence by staying in their own home after retirement. It can become such an obsession that the fact that they can maintain their own home doesn’t mean that it has to be done in the same place that they raised their family in doesn’t even come to mind.

It’s unfortunate that a simple thing like where a person chooses to live during their retirement years can keep them from taking full advantage of quality life opportunities that are available to a person who has the gift of leisure time. Retirement is a major milestone in a person’s life. Embrace it and explore all of the possibilities. Sometimes it will mean making changes, but being open the change will give you the opportunity to enjoy retirement living at its best.

Once a person reaches retirement age, there is really no reason for them to have to keep up with a house that is bigger than what they need. It takes a lot of time to keep up with housekeeping and maintenance chores. It costs money to heat a large home. It can even use physical energy that makes the homeowner too tired to pursue those activities that they looked forward to in their retirement years.

To get the best out of retirement, find a home that allows you to pursue the activities that will keep you enjoying life. For many apartment living is the answer. The ability to lock the door behind you as you leave and know that things will be taken care of until you decide to return can open up possibilities to the carefree retiree who likes to travel on the spur of the moment.

Knowing a landlord will take care of mowing the lawn and weeding the garden will let you enjoy the pleasant days on the golf course, the favorite fishing hole or even the mall.

Enroll in a class and learn a new skill, enhance a hidden talent or simply meet new people instead of spending time keeping unused rooms clean.

What goals gave you the motivation to get up and go to work every day? What did you dream about doing once you reached the magic age and financial position to make retirement not only a possibility, but a reality?

Take out your list. Add to it, cross items off of it, but keep it close to your heart.  Does where you reside help you pursue your bliss or keep you from attending to the rewards of following your dreams. What are your reasons for staying in the same home you’ve lived in during the years you worked? Is it the family home or did you pick it because the location was close to your place of employment.

There are good reasons to keep your home after you retire. If you have them, by all means you should stay and reap the rewards of all of the years you spent paying for and maintaining the home. But, if you feel your home is tying you down and keeping you from enjoying life to the fullest, it may be time to think about moving.

Is Assisted Living Right for You?

by msmith on April 18, 2012

When it comes to options in elder care, assisted living arrangements are the most preferable options around. An assisted living environment generally offers the most options and allows for the fullest possible independent lifestyle outside of independent living or senior housing communities. How can you be sure assisted living is the right option for you or your loved one?

Assisted living communities are meant for those who are still able to do many things on their own. It allows an individual to participate in his or her life to the fullest possible extent while providing the necessary support to make that happen. This is accomplished while letting the resident maintain their dignity and self-respect.

What Is Assisted Living?

An assisted living facility can be a standalone establishment or part of a progressive care complex that allows the elderly to remain in one community as their needs change. Accommodations are set up in an apartment-like fashion with studio and one-bedroom floor plans. Some provide kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves. The construct allows for the closest simulation of a home environment.

Who Needs Assisted Living?

This type of living arrangement allows those who have realized some sort of diminished abilities, usually due to declining health or an injury, to continue living as independently as possible while receiving the necessary support to do so. These individuals often need assistance in one of four main areas.

  • Medical Assistance
  • Household Maintenance
  • Social or Emotional Support
  • Personal Care

Someone who needs help with household chores or cooking or perhaps dressing and bathing but can otherwise tend to their daily needs could benefit from an assisted living community.

What Can You Expect from Assisted Living?

Many assisted living facilities provide a wide range of amenities and services to their residents. Transportation to medical appointments or to go shopping, access to physical fitness equipment and classes and social activities are some of the customary amenities. Common areas where residents can gather to eat and socialize are staples of these facilities.

Most provide 24 hour emergency medical services. Religious services are another common feature. Storage facilities, postal services and beauty salons are sometimes made available within the community. Many allow residents to keep a pet, too.

Assisted living may not be suitable for someone who needs a high degree of care. For those who are only mildly limited, it may be the ideal arrangement. Having the freedom to come and go as they please, entertain and socialize with friends and family and to carry on their lives as normally as possible can provide the safety and the comfort that both the resident and the family are seeking. The twilight of one’s life can be as satisfying and fulfilling as the earlier parts if assisted living arrangements are available.
